My name is Chavez (Sh-vez).
I’m the recipe developer behind Butter, Love & Salt. Originally from a small, rural town in North Carolina (hey, Raeford), I’ve always had a deep connection with food, the stories it tells, the traditions and culture it embraces, the community it builds, and the memories it creates.
Growing up in the South, food wasn’t just a daily necessity but a cornerstone of my community. My introduction to cooking began at a young age, under the guidance of my mom. Her kitchen, warm and fragrant with the aromas of simmering stews, baked mac and cheese, fried chicken, freshly baked cornbread, and pound cake, provided me with my first lessons of cooking.
I remember sitting on a barstool beside her, too short to actually stand to reach the countertop, as she taught me, “measurements don’t exist when you’re cooking from the heart.” With her, every dish had a pulse, a story. She taught me that each recipe held memories of family gatherings, celebrations, and simple moments of joy around the dinner table.
Through my mom’s teachings, I learned that cooking is a way to preserve traditions and pass on stories from one generation to the next. I learned the importance of taking the time to prepare a meal with care and sharing it with others. In her kitchen, I discovered that food has the power to create lasting memories and strengthen bonds between family and friends. Through my mom, I learned the power of butter, the essentialness of putting love in your food, and the importance of salt.
Today, as I cook in my own kitchen, I have recreated some of my family recipes and developed many of my own. With each dish I prepare, I remember that food is not just sustenance but a reflection of who we are and where we come from—a connection to our past and a celebration of our shared future.
